Memorial Day 2012 ~ Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping -Repost

This has been such a popular post for The Solid Truth that I decided to post it again this Memorial Day 2012

In 1867, a hymn by Nella L.Sweet, Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping, was published with a dedication to southern ladies who, as a result of the Civil War, were actively paying homage to their fallen soldiers by decorating and honoring their grave sites. By May 30, 1868, the entire United States followed suit by laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. Although there is much dispute as to the origins of Memorial Day, it is not difficult to imagine that women are the ones who inspired the tradition. Afterall, for the most part, it was women who were left to bury the dead. Grief stricken and with tears flowing, they had to find a way to connect with the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy. Maybe honoring them was a way to deal with not only the grief, but also the guilt we feel for surviving.

Throughout American history women have helped and endured during times of war; even going so far as to join their husbands in war zones to cook their meals and mend their wounds. Later, women kept the war effort strong by working in defense plants or joining in as nurses. As we gained equal rights, thousands became soldiers themselves.

Women possess an emotional strength that may not display itself until called upon to take action. When that strength is riled, nothing can stand in our way. Sometimes I wonder what the women who inspired that hymn by Nella Sweet would think of the way we have evolved and stepped up to causes that help our veterans. Women like Carol Blake, who along with her son Brandon, started Our Forgotten Warriors, a foundation to help veterans recover from the fallout of war and injuries. Then there is Lisa Groves, herself a veteran, who makes certain that countless homeless veterans get a meal every single day through her group, The Veteran’s Connection.

I also wonder what those southern belles weeping at the graves of lost loved ones would think of Kimberly Stahlman and Tracy Shue, widows of Colonel Mike Stahlman and Colonel Philip Shue. These two women have been willing to stand up against odds that can only be likened to staring into the mouth of hell; all in honor of their husband’s memory. Mary Tillman has done the same thing for her beloved Pat.

We can all learn a lot from the military wives, mothers and daughters of America and follow their example everyday of the year.

Kneel where our loves are sleeping,
Dear ones loved in days gone by,
here we bow in holy reverence,
Our bosoms heave the heart-felt sigh.
They fell like brave men, true as steel,
And pour’d their blood like rain–
We feel we owe them all we have,
And can but kneel and weep again.

Turning Tragedy into Activism: Remembering Colonel Philip Shue

Visible to all, the wreckage of Colonel Shue's car serves as a constant reminder that a murder has gone unsolved.

Parked in full view of the residents in Kendall County, Texas, are the remnants of a 1995 Tracer once belonging to Air Force Colonel Philip Shue. Nine years ago, on April 16, 2003, at approximately 5:30-6:00 am, Colonel Shue, kissed his wife Tracy goodbye and headed to work at Lackland Air Force Base.  It was the last time they would ever see each other. At 8:14 am, witnesses observed his car speeding recklessly down Interstate 10 before it veered off the road and crashed into a patch of small trees. When first responders arrived they were flabbergasted to find his body sadistically and intentionally mutilated. Both of his nipples were cut away with surgical precision, a 6-inch long, 1-inch wide incision was made down the middle of his chest; his wrists and ankles were wrapped in duct tape, and a finger and earlobe were cut off. These body parts were never found. There were also numerous injuries that suggested a struggle had taken place.

Authorities in charge of the investigation eventually labeled the death a suicide. However, Tracy Shue refused to accept those findings and fought in every venue available to have Colonel Shue’s cause of death changed to homicide and his killers arrested. She was eventually successful when during a legal proceeding with insurance company USAA, Texas Judge Bill Palmer ruled in June 2008, that Colonel Shue was indeed the victim of homicide. Nevertheless, Kendall County authorities and the Air Force have refused to comply with the ruling and Tracy’s fight for justice continues.

“It feels like yesterday.”  Tracy Shue says as she recalls the afternoon of April 16th, when she received notification that her husband was dead.

“When the Sheriff and minister arrived at our house that day, it was approximately 3:30 pm. I’ve never known for certain why it took them so long to notify me.” Tracy recalls. “A couple of hours later, Al Auxier, from the Department of Public Safety arrived to talk with me. As we sat in the living room discussing the car crash, he blurted out; “Oh, by the way, is there any reason your husband would have duct tape around his wrists and ankles?”

Tracy, still in a state of shock, and still unaware of the mutilation, instantly remembered several life-threatening letters Colonel Shue had received and was saving in a file.

“Oh my God,” she exclaimed, “they’ve killed him.”

Retrieving the threatening letters from Colonel Shue’s desk, she gave them to authorities. She also opened her home and property to investigators, hoping they would find clues as to why her husband was dead. But it was all to no avail.

A little more than a month after Colonel Shue’s funeral, Tracy received a phone call from a reporter with a San Antonio newspaper asking for a comment regarding Colonel Shue’s mutilated body. Until this moment, she had not been told of this information by authorities. As the reporter filled her in on every graphic detail, Tracy, who always knew in her heart that her husband had been murdered, realized the true depth of the struggle for justice that lay ahead to dominate her life.

To this day, Tracy has remained vocal in her determination to find justice for Colonel Shue and she has expanded that passion to include other Military Families facing similar circumstances; surprisingly there are many. As written here before, Tracy is working with Marine widow Kimberly Stahlman to gain support for the Bill of Rights for Bereaved Military Families and developing a website Military Families for Justice.org to educate the public on the serious issues surrounding non-hostile death investigations. Furthermore, in addition to allowing famed medical examiner Cyril Wecht profile the forensic aspects of Colonel Shue’s death in his book “From Crime Scene to Courtroom” she’s also telling the entire, bizarre journey she’s endured in a book tentatively titled “A Case for Murder.”

Philip and Tracy Shue enjoyed a close, loving marriage.

Through it all, Tracy has not given up the hope that the person or people responsible for Colonel Shue’s murder will be arrested and held accountable. But, she has come to accept the possibility that that may not happen.

“Even if there is an arrest, there is no punishment on this earth that will give me peace and closure. However, the killer(s) will not escape justice, because there is a higher power that will see to that.”

In the meantime, Kendall County authorities have asked Tracy on three separate occasions to pick-up Colonel Shue’s wrecked car from the impound yard. But she has refused.

“That car is a crime scene,” she says, “and as far as I’m concerned the authorities have a solemn obligation to treat it as such.”

So for the time being, the wreckage of that 1995 Tracer will sit by the road rusting away; a large, mangled, symbol of injustice.

Searching for Joseph McHenry: Marines Who Remember the Meaning of Semper Fi

Former Marine Joseph McHenry

On March 2, 2012, Iraq war veteran Joseph McHenry set out to go camping near a secluded beach in Pacifica, California and vanished. Law Enforcement officials searched for two-days and found his car in a nearby residential area and his backpack on a beach near Mori Point, but no sign of McHenry. Upon hearing that the search had ended, 20 of his fellow Marines from around the country, decided they couldn’t just let him be left behind. Taking time off of work and flying to California to search for a man they never met, speaks volumes of their character. I’m sure McHenry’s family will be forever grateful. Military families need a lot more of this kind of support and dedication!

Poll: Army Pvt. Danny Chen Was Bullied to Death. What Are Your Thoughts?

The tragic death of Army Pvt. Danny Chen is sickening, and it has brought the topic of bullying in the military to the forefront. I have decided to include this topic in an upcoming article I am writing, and would like to hear from everybody; especially those with direct military connections. If you are unfamiliar with the specifics of the case, check out Jennifer Gonnerman’s piece in New York Magazine for details.  Please check all answers that apply to your views and feel free to comment.

Will the Sheriff’s Race in Kendall County Texas Bring Justice for Colonel Philip Shue?

The following guest post was written by Tracy Shue. Tracy and I are hard at work writing the story of Colonel Philip Shue’s murder. I must say that the bizarre manner in which Colonel Shue was killed is matched only in strangeness by the findings of the Sheriff’s Department in Kendall County, Texas.

Cilla McCain

In Kendall County, Texas, the wreckage of Colonel Shue’s car serves as a constant reminder that a murder has gone unsolved.

As the Widow of murdered USAF Colonel Philip Michael Shue, I have closely watched and been asked  my opinion regarding the upcoming Texas race for Kendall County Sheriff.

Whether my opinion is being sought by the morbidly curious or by a concerned citizen deciding on their vote, my response remains consistent; “whoever is elected to the office of Kendall County Sheriff must possess the core values of honesty, integrity and courage;  to “right the wrong”,  committed during the Kendall County death investigation of Colonel Philip Michael Shue.

The death of my husband was ruled a Homicide by  Judge Bill Palmer in a Kendall County Court of Law and by renowned Forensic Pathologist Cyril Wecht who deemed it “consistent with homicide” in a chapter of his most recent book, From Crime Scene to Courtroom.

Four years following Judge Palmer’s  ruling of Homicide, it is unconscionable that  JP Larry James (Pct 1), DA Bruce Curry and incumbent Sheriff Roger Duncan have refused to review case findings and new evidence discovered during and after trial.

Either candidate elected , Al Auxier or Shad Prichard, can anticipate my ongoing relentless  demand for a full investigation into my husband’s murder by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and answers to many lingering questions regarding  the actions of themselves and others in the death investigation  of USAF Colonel Philip Shue.

In an upcoming book, co-authored with writer Cilla McCain, the case of my husband’s murder will be presented in the hope of exposing the truth and one day finding justice.

Tell President Obama to Bring Home America’s Only Living POW!

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl of Idaho was captured by the Afghan Taliban in June 2009. His family and supporters have waited patiently for his return but now feel the U.S. Government is not doing enough to secure his safe release – calling the continued delays “unacceptable.”

The Taliban has released numerous propaganda videos showing a frightened Bergdahl begging for America to bring him home to his family. Yet, nobody seems to be paying attention.

Although, the United States does not negotiate with terrorists, Sgt. Bergdahl’s capture must remain a top priority for the U.S. government as well as for his fellow American’s. We cannot allow a fellow citizen to languish in the hands of terrorists any longer!

Please sign this petition telling President Barack Obama that you will not allow Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to be forgotten and to please facilitate his release as soon as possible!

Attn: Veterans – We’ve “Got Your 6″

With so many negative situations happening to veteran’s and their families, it’s nice to be able to share some positive news for a change!

In military lingo, “Got Your 6,” means, “I’ve got your back.” It’s also the name of an initiative started by the entertainment industry to “change the conversation in America, so that our returning veterans are not seen as liabilities, but as assets.” We can all join this important movement!

Supported in part by the Clinton Global Initiative, according to its website, the goals of “Got Your 6″ are simple and positive:

Inspire Americans to help bridge the civilian-military divide.

Provide tools, platforms, and resources that Americans can use to feel more comfortable with military and veteran culture.

Create opportunities for veterans and civilians to join together to reinvigorate our communities.

Celebrities like Tom Hanks and Michael Douglas are endorsing “Got Your 6” with public service announcements and movie studios Disney and Comcast have promised to hire thousands of veteran’s.

We can all contribute!  Adopt the goals of Got Your 6 and pledge your support by signing this petition and telling American veteran’s we will do all we can to welcome them home properly!

Pilots Need to Breathe!!

F-22 Raptor

F-22 Raptor Fighter Jets have a mysterious malfunction that is cutting off oxygen for its pilots. Despite this, the Air Force is refusing to ground the F-22’s and threaten any pilot who refuses to fly them with career destruction!

At least 25 cases of Hypoxia have been reported by F-22 Pilots. Hypoxia results from a lack of oxygen that leads rapidly to unconsciousness.  One pilot, Captain Jeff Haney, was killed when a lack of oxygen caused him to pass out and crash! But the Air Force will not accept responsibility for Haney’s death and continue to order Pilots to fly these potential death traps!

This Billion Dollar Fleet of F-22 Raptors have never been used for combat purposes and there is no immediate need to do so!

Please demand the grounding of F-22 Raptors until the unknown malfunction is corrected!

Allow Veterans a Drug-Free Alternative for PTSD Treatment!

There are alternatives to the confusing maze of polypharmacy.

A Petition has been launched asking the VA to pay for alternative treatments for PTSD and TBI. Click Here to sign!

Studies prove that FDA Approved, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or (HBOT) is a highly effective drug-alternative treatment  for Troops and Veterans suffering with Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yet the Veteran’s Administration will not pay for the treatment!

Although 1.2 million dollars has been granted by the government for further study of HBOT, existing studies already prove it is a safe and effective alternative to prescription drugs and costs about the same!

The VA should pay for alternative PTSD/TBI treatments that are proven effective and safe!

Give our Veterans and Troops choices in their medical care! Ask the VA to pay for HBOT treatments now, rather than waiting for further, needless studies that could take years and waste millions of dollars!

Studies by the nation’s leading research for HBOT state the following very clearly:

“. . . improvements were seen in 92% of vets experiencing short-term memory problems, 87% of those complaining of headaches, 93% of those with cognitive deficits, 75% with sleep disruption, and 93% with depression. There were also improvements in irritability, mood swings, impulsivity, balance, motor function, IQ, and blood flow in the brain, as well as the reduction in PTSD symptoms and suicidal thoughts. And there was a reduction in—or complete elimination of—psychoactive and narcotic prescription medication usage in 64% of those previously prescribed the medication.”

Seroquel causing veteran deaths

Care2.org Petition: Tell the VA: No More Drug-Induced Veteran Deaths!

Petition: Tell the VA and DoD to Ban Seroquel and Investigate Veteran Deaths!

Troops and Veteran's are dying from Sudden Cardiac Death while taking Seroquel

Hundreds of young military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are going to sleep and never waking up! Why? Because their doctors are prescribing them the drug Seroquel for insomnia and it is causing them to die of Sudden Cardiac Death. Manufactured by Astra Zeneca, Seroquel was first introduced in 1997 to treat Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia – NOT PTSD! Since that time, Astra Zeneca has been found guilty of marketing the drug for conditions not approved of by the FDA and that also contradicts its own usage recommendations.

To make matters worse, Seroquel should not be given to patients who are taking anti-depressants as this increases the risk of its side effects; side effects that include death. With anti-depressants being the first line of defense in treating PTSD, this puts our troops at an even higher risk of drug interaction complications.

Astra-Zeneca has poured more than 32.6 million dollars into lobbying our government to get their way! Please sign this petition telling the House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs that no amount of money is great enough to risk a human beings death and to stop the use of Seroquel for our nations military!
